Gaston Fishing Report - Late July 09

Charlie and his son Brendan with their catch from Lake Gaston
Saturday morning July 25 on Lake Gaston NC. It was a balmy hot morning with no wind and the water was 82 degrees.
There was a local tournament going on and the lake was busy early.

I picked Charlie and his son Brendan up at their dock at 7:00 am for a 5 hour trip. We went all the way to the dam and Carolina rigged some of my favorite spots with only one fish. Then we ran all the way back up above the Eaton's ferry bridge and fished off shore rocks. Charlie and Brendan managed a few more nice fish before it got to hot and the jet skies and pleasure boats stirred the lake up to bad. The bight was very subtitle and they had to fish their rigs very slow to get the bites.
Good job guys!

Gaston Fishing Report - May 09

Clients of Rick Morris holding up a some of their catch from a 1/2 day trip on Lake Gaston
May 25, 2009: I spent half the day with Rich and Chris who have a summer home on Lake Gaston. They obtained my services to learn how to catch lake Gaston Bass and learn bass catching techniques in general. The morning was overcast and warm with little or no wind and the water temp was 74 degrees. I started them out using spinning rods with top water baits, and they caught a couple of keepers. Then they switched over to Carolina rigs, using spinning rods again. Between them, they caught 10 or 12 nice 2 to 3 pound bass. Rich hooked into a big one, but it unfortunately broke the line.

All in all, they had a great morning catching bass and asking many questions on how to improve their bass fishing skills. We covered a lesson on how to use a bait casting rod, boat positioning, what to look for, and how to read a Lowrance depth finder/GPS. They were very happy with our success and the knowledge they gained. I wish them well on their next fishing trip.

Gaston Fishing Report - Mid July 09

Gaston Fishing Trip in July 2009
July 17, 2009: On This Friday morning I picked up Will and his 2 sons, Austin and Hunter at their dock in Pea Hill creek on Lake Gaston. This was to be a half day trip of 5 hours.

We started out fishing top water and looking for schoolers near the dam with little success. After 2 hours Austin, who is very good at walking the dog with spook type baits had only 2 blow ups. As usual when there is no top water bite we switch over to the Carolina rig and lizard. We fished small points with a rough bottom trying to avoid the slim or dying vegetation that is due to the chemicals that are put in the lake for vegetation control. This treatment does affect fishing negatively on Lake Gaston and others around the country. Anyway after several points Austin and Hunter finally slowed down their retrieve and both set the hook at the same time! They had a double, we landed both fish and a few more by lunch. At the end of our day Austin hooked into a 5 pounder in Pea Hill creek but it came off when it jumped, Austin was a little upset but he knows where that lunker lives. We all had a great time and Austin and Hunter out fished their Dad.
